The Canonisation of John Henry Newman October 2019

The Holy Father canonised John Henry Newman at St Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City on Sunday 13 October. Further information about the Canonisation can be found at the official website newmancanonisation.com. Saint John Henry Newman founded the first Oratory in England, following St Philip Neri’s example at the Chiesa Nuova in Rome. The Schola travelled to Rome and sang at the Canonisation as well as a number of services and events across the weekend:

Friday 11 October 6pm

Choral Concert, Pontificio Collegio Urbano

A concert of liturgical repertoire sung for the Seminarians of the Urbano College, where Saint John Henry Newman studied for the Priesthood. from the Spanish Renaissance and Tudor England, including works by Guerrero, Morales, Tallis & Byrd.

Private Audience with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Vatican City

The Schola were honoured by a private audience with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and sang to him four motets, Ave Maria by Victoria, Salvator Mundi by Tallis, Ave verum corpus & Haec Dies by William Byrd. Afterwards the Headmaster of The London Oratory School, Mr Dan Wright, presented Pope Benedict with a book about the the school. Pope Benedict gave gifts to the boys and staff and gave us his blessing.

Vigil of Prayer, The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore

A service of prayer on the eve of John Henry Newman’s Canonisation. Led by Archbishop Bernard Longley and with music by Stanford and Victoria.

Canonisation Mass, St Peter’s Basilica

The Holy Father canonised John Henry Newman as well as Sister Mariam Thresia, Giuseppina Vannini, Dulce Lopes Pontes and Margarita Bays. The Director of the Papal Choir, the Cappella Sistina, graciously invited the London Oratory Schola to sing during the Offertory: the Schola sang Palestrina’s Exsultate Deo.

Reception, Pontificio Collegio Urbano

Following the Canonisation Mass the Schola sang at a reception at the Pontificio Collegio Urbano in the presence of HRH The Prince of Wales.

Musical Oratory, Chiesa Nuova

A service of readings and reflections from Saint John Henry Newman at the Roman Oratory, with choral works by Victoria, Palestrina and Lassus.

Monday 14 October 10.30am

Pontifical Mass of Thanksgiving, The Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano

A Pontifical Mass celebrated by His Eminence Cardinal Nichols, with works by Victoria, Viadana and Monteverdi.
